Let me introduce you to the newest F tuba on the market, the first production F tuba ever manufactured in the United States of America. The instrument has a 16″ diameter bell, a graduated valve bore, and stands 31″ tall. These photos are of prototype #1, which is in my shop, and available for play-testing now. This particular instrument has a bore starting at .684″, tapering up to a .730″ internally-vented 5th rotor. Kanstul is still making developmental changes to the instrument, so there will be some subtle changes in specifications as it develops, although the overall setup will remain the same. I am delighted with this tuba, as it is small-enough to be a wonderful solo- and chamber ensemble instrument, but is just large-enough to speak with authority and fill the hall with clean, clear sound. This instrument has inspired me to start playing F tuba again, as it is a pleasure, not a struggle to play it and play it well. The infamous F tuba “low C range” is as easy-to-play as a CC tuba. This tuba is a leap forward in F tuba design, and you’ll know it as soon as you play one. The prototype may be available for sale, too. This instrument is based on the measurements of the old Martin Mammoth recording bass, arguably making it a 6/4 size tuba, but with the .689″ bore, it is agile and easy-to-play, particularly for an instrument this size. The instrument features two main tuning slides, the traditional one below the valveset and an upper main tuning slide located within easy reach of the performer’s left hand. Equipped with an adjustable thumb ring, the tune-any-note main tuning slide moves effortlessly and enables the performer to make fine tuning adjustments for any pitch with just one slide. The instrument is also equipped with an extra-long upper 4th valve tuning slide with a pull ring, enabling the performer to progressively pull the 4th slide and play chromatically, in-tune, all the way to the pedal range, using the same fingerings as an automatic-compensating instrument without the added resistance. This tuba is built utilizing sturdy modular construction, and is quite durable, as well as “repair-friendly”. I have vented the very-tight, hand-lapped monel pistons, to further enhance the agility and clarity of tone production in technical passages.
