Boosey & Hawkes Sovereign 3+1 compensating euphonium, silver-plated, serial # 663744. Manufactured c. 1981, this instrument has a 12″ diameter bell, large-shank receiver, .578″/.648″ bore, 4 new Meinl-Weston water keys, and 4 vented pistons for clear and smooth articulation, even in very fast passages. I have refurbished this instrument in my shop, chemically-cleaning and treating the metal, removing dents, adding the water keys, venting the pistons, precisely aligning the valves, and protecting the instrument with TarniShield silver polish, which has the best tarnish-preventative I’ve found. I’ve also outfitted this instrument with a new woodshell hard case. This instrument is not overly-heavy like some of the newer instruments, but does offer a full, rich and satisfying sound with very fine intonation. Includes new professional mouthpiece if desired.

SOLD – Reynolds Contempora BBb recording bass, serial # 62122, lacquered, 23″ bell, .685″ bore, approx. 52″ tall. Made in Cleveland, OH in 1961, this instrument is an amazing piece of workmanship. The original valves are in great condition, it features Reynolds’ 1st and 3rd valve pull rings, as well as a spring loaded centering mechanism on 1st that returns it to a pre-set position after pulling or pusing the slide. Sort-of like a King tuba that went to the gym and worked out, this tuba can put out a lot of high-quality sound. Ready-to-play-tonight.

Besson automatic-compensating 3-valve BBb tuba, serial # 374153, lacquered, 17 1/4″ bell, bore .730″, 40″ tall. This BBb tuba is the essence of the British tradition, made more friendly to modern users by the elimination of the brass ball on the bottom bow, and a leadpipe receiver opened-up to receive a modern standard mouthpiece. Built in the 1960′s, it has seen a bit of school use but has many years of good use left. The 3-valve automatic-compensating models are considered my a number of players to be the most in-tune instruments available. I find it to play very well throughout the entire range from low E to the extreme high register, and also in the pedal range. A really nice player at a budget price. Comes with Pro-Tec gig bag.

SOLD – H. N. White “King” BBb recording bass, serial # 150049, bell 21 7/8″, bore .750″, unlacquered, one-piece bell. This rare tuba, manufactured c. 1934, is even more rare because of it’s condition. The large-bore valves have been replated at some point and are tight and smooth, and the one-piece recording bell is in excellent condition. The instrument looks to have never been seriously dented, and plays very, very nicely. The instrument has no case, but can be supplied with a gig bag upon request.

SOLD – King 2341-UB BBb tuba, serial # 5 765125, bore .689″, bell 19″, 39 1/2″ tall, lacquered. The “5″ prefix on a King serial number indicates that it was made between 1996-2000, making this one of the very last of the old-style King 2341′s made. Still in almost-new condition, I have replaced the original valve guides with quiet nylon guides, and replaced the springs with Yamaha springs, making the valves some of the very best you’ll ever find in a King tuba. I also recently managed to find an outstanding set of original King cases for the instrument, to give it the protection it deserves. The excellent intonation and rich tone quality make this one of my favorites, of all the tubas I’ve ever played.

This Conn Connstellation euphonium, serial # E47787, comes with original hard case, and Humes & Berg Stonelined straight mute. Manufactured c. 1965, this top-of-the-line instrument of it’s time features a main tuning slide throw ring mechanism and tuning adjuster, and the patented Conn “clickless” short-action valves. The original lacquer is excellent.

Holton BB-345 6/4 BBb tuba – $6,500.00

SOLD – This Holton BB-345 6/4 BBb tuba, with .750″ bore, 19 7/8″ bell diameter, approx. 36″ tall, and serial # 393725 was manufactured in 1965. This American classic has been disassembled, de-dented, reassembled and extensively cleaned in my shop. It is now among the most mechanically sound Holton 6/4 tubas still in existence. I replaced the thread ring on the 1st valve casing with a new reproduction, and patched the tiny cracks in the bell. The finger buttons are large and York-like, fabricated to fit the instrument better than the tiny originals and make for more comfortable playing. The valves are in remarkably good condition, as are the slides. This instrument impresses me as playing much like a York 6/4, and for good reason. Different finishes available upon request. The instrument can be ordered with- or without case or gig bag.

Martin – Conn – H.N. White King custom raincatcher BBb sousaphone – $1,650.00

Martin Conn H.N. White King custom raincatcher BBb sousaphone with valveset serial # 16161. Built by the late Harv Hartmann, this instrument almost defies description until you see it. And, the most amazing thing about fitting a Martin .730″ bore valveset on a Conn 14K fiberglass body, then removing the bell bow and fitting an H.N. White tenon and 24″ diameter recording bell to the body, is that it really works! The result is a unique, dark and full sounding instrument that plays in tune, and is really fun to play, also. As you see, it also fits quite nicely into a Pro-Tec gig bag. The Martin valves appear to have been re-plated, and everything is in really good mechanical order on this tuba. One added bonus with this instrument is, that you could fit a King upright bell to it and have a really nice helicon, too. Complete with neck and bits, and Pro-Tec gig bag.

This Frank Holton BBb raincatcher jumbo sousaphone “Beverely June”, serial # 114305, has original lacquered body, original gold-plated 18 11/16″ bell, .750″ bore short-action valves. After research, I have not yet been able to get a definitive answer of who Beverely June was, but this is the most unique, distinctive sousaphone I’ve ever encountered. In the depths of the Great Depression, gold-plating the entire instrument would have probably been too costly, and the appearance difference between a fresh clear lacquer on the body and the gold-plated bell would have been minimal. The instrument has rebuilt Holton patented short-action valves, sometimes referred to as “scoop” valves. The instrument is a fine player, and an extremely rare, one-of-a-kind historical piece.
